How to Read Outlier's Line Movement and Public Bet Percentage Charts
Outlier charts Line Movement and Public Bet percentage for every single available betting market. This can be very useful for bettors deciding whether to place a bet immediately or to wait for the odds to shift.
Before looking at the Line Movement and Public Bet Percentage Chart, let's define the "Odds" and the "% Bets" being displayed on the chart.
Odds: The sportsbooks' price for the bet.
% Bets: The percentage of bets placed. Note that this statistic is distinct from "Public Money," which is a measurement of the dollar amount laid on either side of a bet. For example, if ten bettors were betting on the Chief's game, seven for the Chiefs, and three for the Lions, it would be said that 70% of Public Bets were placed on the Chiefs, even if the Lions bettor wagered a significantly larger dollar amount.
Here's what the chart for a Kansas City Chiefs moneyline looks like on Outlier:
You'll see that Chiefs moneyline odds are listed on the left Y-axis. Note that Kansas City opened as the favorite and remains the favorite to win the game (Opening Odds: -285; Current Odds: -278). As the line moves up the Y-axis, the odds get longer (i.e., Kansas City is being viewed as less and less of a favorite). If the line was to move down the Y-axis, the odds would be shortening (i.e., Chiefs would be viewed as a heavier favorite).
The percentage of total bets placed on Kansas to win is listed on the right Y-axis. When the public began betting on the moneyline (5/19 @ 2:00am) the Chiefs were heavy favorites and close to 85% of the public were betting that Kansas City would win the game. However, as the the sportsbooks began to adjust the odds (still favoring Kansas City, but not as aggressively), the public pulled back off of Chiefs moneyline; with roughly 26% determining that Chiefs opponent was a better bet at current odds.
The X-axis is simply a timeline from the moment the odds became public to present.
